During her school break, Ayumi Tachibana returns to her childhood home in Ochitani Village, hoping to spend time with her recovering mother, Toshie, and reconnect with an old friend, Reiko. But her peaceful visit is shattered the next morning when Gozo Kusano, the village's former mayor, is found dead in a snowy area outside his house. Toshie, who discovered the body, becomes the prime suspect after only her footprints are found near the crime scene. While waiting for her mother to return from police questioning, Ayumi learns of a bitter feud between the Tachibana and Kusano families. What seems like a simple murder is linked to an ancient legend of a fallen samurai, a cold case from 18 years ago, and a series of killings. Now Ayumi must solve the mystery before it's too late.
