Living her day to day life as a magic scholar and reluctant village aid, Barrisaxe spends a peaceful existence occasionally marked by encounters with her eccentric friend, a man who lives only by the title of the Caviolinier.

When the two of them discover something haunting in the countryside, the consequences of lending a helping hand spiral out of control in ways that neither could expect.
