Spontaneous Power-ups

This kind of plot device shows itself in stories where the characters suddenly reveal hidden powers, strategies and techniques (moves) to save themselves from a pinch, no matter how severe the situation is.

They either spontaneously invent these new strategies and techniques (moves) OR somehow suddenly acquire new powers OR remember things that they learned/found earlier, which rarely gets even mentioned before, etc. Examples are as many as shounen style stories go...
