Knotting is a term that refers to the swelling of a dog or wolf’s genitals during mating, which causes it to lock inside the partner’s orifice until ejaculation is complete. Knotting typically lasts for between 5 and 20 minutes but sometimes longer to prevent semen from leaking from the vagina.

While in reality this should only be possible in canine x canine and canine x human intercourse, in fiction, particularly in fanfiction, like shapeshifter/werewolf romance or Omegaverse, it is often depicted as a powerful and intimate part of the mating process.
