To curb the growing power of the priests of Amun, King Amenhotep IV began worshiping the sun god Aten, even renaming himself Akhenaten (Serviceable to the Aten).

The king's devotion gradually grew more extreme, eventually leading him to reject the traditional Egyptian pantheon.
